Educational Psychology Service

Medway Service

Service Description

Service Description:
We are a team of Educational Psychologists registered with the Health Care Professionals Council (HCPC). For the most part but not exclusively we work with children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities supporting their learning and emotional well-being.

Every school in Medway has a named Educational Psychologist and we do three In School Review (ISR) meetings a year when consultations range from discussing individual children and ways of supporting them, to whole school issues and planning bespoke training for staff.
We also support schools and settings when there is a death of a child or member of the school staff.
Educational Psychologists apply psychology to improve the learning outcomes and emotional well-being for children and young people. Listening to the voice of the child is central to our work as is promoting inclusion. We work closely with parents and carers, teachers and learning support assistants and colleagues in health and social care.
We use a range of assessments to understand the strengths and difficulties of individual children and work in consultation to determine the best ways of supporting them. Recent training has included Attachment, ELSA training (Emotional Literacy for Support Assistants), Transgender, Precision teaching, Autism Strategies for the classroom, Working memory, Positive Psychology, Mindfulness, Identifying and Maintaining Resilience.

School age children and young people are referred to the service by their school SENCO. We are a traded service and schools purchase EP time. Other teams also purchase training, interventions and therapeutic work.
Educational Psychologists also assess children and young people undergoing an Education Health and Care Plan assessment.
