Service Description:The Place2Be (P2B) with the aim to enable emotional and therapeutic support to be given to children in primary schools. P2B is a preventative mental health service for children in schools and aims to encourage confidence, nurture independence and raise self-esteem.
P2B provides an environment where children can be heard, feel supported and express their feelings safely. There are 21 P2B hubs throughout Scotland, Wales and England. P2B projects are an integral part of the schools where they are based and support parents, school staff as well as children.
Trained counsellors work therapeutically with children who are referred by teachers, parents and the children themselves. Parent Workers also work in most schools offering free counselling to 2 parents/carers at any one time. Volunteer counsellor placements are currently available in our 9 Medway schools.
A Place for Parents: which is open to all mothers, fathers, grandparents and carers whose children are being supported by Place2Be. It provides a safe space within school where parents can work with an experienced professional to explore and express their own thoughts and feelings. Typical issues include lack of self-confidence or self esteem, doubts about being a 'good enough' parent, bereavement, and mental health issues such as depression, drinking problems, and moving on from domestic violence. The service is free and confidential and acts quickly.
How familes benefit: our aim is for parents to become more self-aware, to gain in confidennce and to develop ways of coping. This makes them more at ease in their parenting roles and better able to devleop positive and supportive relationships with their children.
